Slow, snow Sunday

This morning felt really chilly with an icy grey cloud hanging low over the village. It was not long before it started to snow, so it seemed a really good time to reach for the thread and needle and continue my sewing.

I can't tell you what it is as the person it is destined for does read my blog however what I am sharing is a little tip I picked up a while ago and used very successfully today. See the two marks on my nail? They line up with the blanket stitches. I'd read that if you are doing tiny sewing, by marking on your nail the distance you want to your stitches to be, it helps give a regular spaced out rhythm to your sewing and once you've completed the stitching - you just wash off the ink on your nail. Simples!

By lunch the snow suddenly stopped and although the sun didn't break through the clouds, the sky lightened and in places the snow glowed gold in the afternoon gloom.

We didn't go too far, just our local 'dog loop' around the village and Moss was delighted - she loves snow, racing around, skidding and chasing snowballs. She grabs mouthfuls of snow and seems to enjoy chewing it - strange. The next picture is my favourite for today - I love how she is 'standing proud' with her stick she 'troffled' out of the snow to carry.
As we reached the highest point of our walk, a snow-laden fog drifted over the hill and down into the valley, slipping in and around of buildings. It gave the village wind turbine the appearance of floating about the ridge.
We dropped off the ridge we were on, back down into the village, as we - although wrapped warmly and walking briskly - were both just barely warm enough and I was certain I could hear the 'kettle calling' to us. And of course - you just can not have a mug of tea whilst warming your toes in front of the fire - without a fiery dark ginger cake ..... so that is what we did!

I will share the recipe with you tomorrow - unless something more interesting happens - but at the moment the cake will top most things due to it's deep dark gingery and gooey goodness with it's soft and squidgy texture.... just might have to go in for a third oops I mean 'another' piece, before my mug of tea is finished.
Well.
That is the weekend.
It has slipped away somewhat. Never mind😊

Hope your weekend was gently kind to you and there were precious moment to treasure xxxπŸ’—πŸ’—

  1. The snowy snaps are amazing & I love the one of Moss too, though the wind turbine has a very eerie look about it. Oh, the ginger cake looks very scummy & I won't make one at the moment as I made a couple of date rolls & an Old English Matrimonial slice on Saturday. It has warmed up here a little now, but then it is nearly summer even if the weather nerds have had other thoughts through most of November. Stay warm & safe and big hugs from down under.

    1. I had look up the matrimonial slice as I'd never heard of it before.
It is snowy white outside and very chilly but seeing it is November - cant complain! Glad I am home today, can craft near the fire and nice and toasty:)

  2. It looks like you have much more snow there than we have here - only a thin covering, just enough to be awkward as my mum would say. I love the photo of the five trees in the sun, it looks very artistic, and Pan looks cute sitting in the window :)

    1. I like that - just enough to be awkward, that is a very good description! Those trees have only featured in my photos in the last couple of years, they have always been there but until the lockdown, I just did not 'see' them for what they were - beautiful. So now I try and take photos of them each time I go by :)

  3. Lovely snowy photos . No snow at all here although there must have been some not far away as I saw a car go by yesterday with a thick layer on it's roof

    1. We've had cars come off the higher parts of the village with what looks like a mattress thick layer of snow on the roof - you'd think the driver would brush it off!

  4. I happened to see the pencil marks on your finger nail tip on Saturday whilst looking at Facebook. Must try it out as my stitches are never even.... I've another what you are making but will not say in case I am correct as I don't want to spoil the surprise you are making for someone. We have electricity but no mobile signal and this morning very little water (United Utilities say there is a problem). So it looks like I will have to sit and sew! xx

  5. Gosh, that's a worthwhile fall of snow and what a lovely walk out in it too. Clever Moss finding that stick beneath it!

Thank you for the stitching tip - I take it you're left handed? I am plodding on with my x-stitch gift and nearly there now. Nice to give myself an excuse to sit down on a winter's afternoon and SEW!

That cake looks good too. I have a Chocolate Gingerbread recipe I blow the dust off now and again. Ginger cake is always SO good.

    1. I am!! (left handed) The cake was a new to me recipe, written in US terminology so it took a bit of translation, however, worth it and I will share it - make a huge cake so I think I will halve the quantities too! haha

  6. Mark on thumbnail: lovely tip, thank you :-) Coincidentally, I spent/wasted the best part of an hour yesterday looking for a similar thing: ages ago I saw a picture where someone had a plastic guide which slipped onto the end of her finger, a bit like a ring with a flat top. Can I find the ruddy thing now I want it?

You've had more snow than us, I am sure Moss was ecstatic. Daisy was the same - hated water, hated being cold, but could not keep her out of frozen white stuff πŸΎπŸ’š

    1. We were chuckling yesterday about Moss's obsession with water - be it wet or frozen until it comes to bath time - then it is water-torture and call for help time haha

  7. I love that fingernail mark tip … thank you for sharing. We have had a fair bit of snow here too so may have to give our walk a miss as may be tricky for Martin with his crutches. There is nothing nicer than a real sticky ginger cake … I have a recipe handed down from my mum and it’s a real favourite. Stay warm πŸ˜ƒ

    1. I thought we were going to get another dose this afternoon - fortunately it skimmed around us - the village was struggling enough as it was - no power, no lines and no water! what a day!
