November - stop being dreary - Please!

This time of the year can veer from dreary and damp to sparkly and crisp, recently it has predominantly been the former - driech and dingy and damply cold.

The colours are muted now, gone is the spring luminosity or the summer brashness or the autumnal glow, leaving a dull palette requiring sunshine to lift it or frost to give it sparkle.
This make me look inward and observe the smaller view rather than the expansive one.
Makes me see the secretive and shy.
Small and delicate pixie cup lichen quietly shelter between the rocks of a stone wall.
Enigmatic Roe deer tiptoe silently through sodden leaf matter.
Sunsets - when not washed out by rain, translucently illuminate straw-coloured moorland grasses.
The anomaly being the winter flowering scented shrubs,
this Daphne fills the lane with it's delicate and sweet perfume,
it's small blooms glowing in the low lights.

Some one who finds joy in everything - the wetter the better being top of the list .....
So, now, with the fire crackling, the lights twinkling and
my crochet blanket tucked snugly around my legs, I am warm and cozy.

Have a good Thursday and keep warm :) xxx

PS - Up until yesterday morning, the news regarding the rescued cat had been good - the owner had been traced. It had appeared he last saw his cat in August.  Unfortunately I heard the sad news that the cat, despite having antibiotics, steroids, warmth, love and food (the vet took the cat home every night to ensure wonderful all round care) began to deteriorate after a few days and the sad decision to prevent further suffering - was put to sleep. All I could think was that his last 10 - 12 days were warm and comforting, he was cared for and was fed and looked after and not out in the weather. Still sad though.

  1. Our November has been similarly dreary, and I am hibernating, quietly waiting for Winter Solstice to come around again, the days to lengthen, light to return, new growth to begin.

Thank you for the update - such sad news about the cat - what a lovely vet - I am guessing pusskins had not gone back to his owner because he was too poorly? A hard decision was taken, but the kindest one. Been there, done that, still got the box of tissues to hand . . .

  2. Such sad news about the cat. Sometimes, no matter how much we hope for a positive outcome, it is not to be. As you say, it is a comfort to know he was looked after in the end. X

  3. Sorry news about the rescued cat. At least, as you say, his last few days were spent cared for.
Every season has its beauty and it’s important to stop and look for it. I’ve struggled today as it’s so grey and damp but at least the gold finches at the feeder are keeping little dashes of colour in my peripheral vision. B x

  4. Very damp and dreary here too today. Doesn't seem to be bothering the squirrels as they scamper in the wet leaves in the garden.
Poor kitty, the ultimate love to be able to give release when you know the time is right.

  5. Oh but, you are finding lovely things, to photograph! Even though the weather is "icky"! See? All is not blahhhhhhhhhhh.... If we open our eyes, and search. -smile-

Your being home and hibernating, with all the delightful things, which make for feeling warm and cozy, in "icky" weather.... This part sounds delightful. -smile- YOu may not think so, but I say, you are doing wonderfully, with November!

The cat story is sad in a way. But not really. The poor thing did not have to spend its last days, in miserable conditions, and being in pain, from all its issues. It was very well cared for, not only medically, but with love and being in a home. A blessed ending...

  8. That's so sad about the cat, I had hoped any update would be a positive one but at least he knew love, warmth and care in his last few days.

  9. Lovely photos. I did not know the shrub is called Daphne. Such pretty delicate flowers. And I love the name of the fungi. :) So wonderful to see a Roe deer. Sorry to hear about the poor cat. X

  10. Yes, the unpleasant weather is around though the last week has been 'good', well no heavy rain, big winds or snow! I too am looking forward to spring, but like you I try to see the beauty/interest in nature. At the moment it is Fieldfares vising my (yes my) garden. A first for me. Out on a walk today without my camera, I stopped to look over a wall and saw a treecreeper, a nuthatch and a LBJ. Great stuff out there if one looks around. Muddy Moss is happy; so sad about the cat.

  11. Such beautiful words and photos to brighten up this dreary time of year. I am so sorry to hear about the cat but glad to hear he was so well cared for in his last days.
