Where did the weekend go?

Why is it a four day weekend seems to slip by as fast as a two day one?

No, I don't know either, however I do know that we must have filled every last second with something and you know that old adage ...I'm going to work for a rest?? Well, I think that might be what I've planned for the rest of this week!

Friday evening kicked off with an picnic (of fish and chips) eaten outside alongside one of our favourite picturesque canal banks near Gargrave. With Eldest and his lovely girl we watched an amazing and unexpected display of hot air balloons as they drifted through the sunset. We were surrounded by cowslips, violets and early bluebells. Moss was of course more than happy to throw herself into the canal at a moment's notice and was a little disappointed when it was time to eventually leave however within  a few seconds she was racing up and down following interesting scents and hunting down sticks - happy dog.

Saturday was rather good too - we set off for a walk in Skipton Castle Woods to find the sculptures. Himself and I have been before and now that there was a new willow sculpture of a stag, we decided that we'd take Eldest and GF to show them too. It was such a lovely day, a bit fresh to start but soon warmed up and despite it being a bank holiday and warm(ish) and sunny(ish) it was surprisingly quiet. The town centre was busy but still quieter than I have seen it in the past. The woods did not disappoint and nor did the new stag. Most enjoyable.

Eldest's GF has been delighted by all the lambs in the fields but has never had the opportunity to bottle feed or cuddle a lamb, so I messaged a friend who has rare breed sheep and goats and asked it there was a chance for a bit of lamb cuddling action and the answer was yes! So off we went and held and tickled the cutest (and tiniest) Ronaldsay lambs we've ever seen then spent a very happy time scritching and scratching Golden Guernsey goats and goat kids.

Sunday we had my folks over for tea and cake and in the afternoon we went off looking at the lambs in the fields - the fields are liberally sprinkled with lambs around the village, from the tiniest little long legged lambs to the mini sheep sized lambs full of bravado as they charge around the fields in little groups.

By Monday it was back to Himself and I so we decided to jump in the van and head off to the Dales for a walk. Himself chose Littondale and we easily found parking above the isolated valley. Once again we were surprised how quiet the roads were and how few folk were about despite again the sunny and reasonably warm weather. We dropped down on to the side of the valley and walked up to the head of it, crossed over and back down on the other side. There was a cutting breeze that seemed to find its way through all clothing however, when the sun shone it was gorgeous. We stopped in a dry limestone riverbed for our lunch and found a sheltered and warm spot. Lunch was piping hot mushroom soup, cheese and pickle sarnies followed by chocolate eggs - what a treat! Moss of course found a pool of water and played 'dipping for sticks' as she stuck her face in and blew bubbles in the rather chilly water. (what a strange dog!)
The last stretch back up to the van was a bit of a pull as it was from the valley bottom (in the far distance in the main photograph) up to the crest of the hill on the left. In all it was over six miles and we hardly saw a soul.

Now, Tuesday, I am wondering what happened to our extended weekend? I know we stuffed it full and made the most of every minute but it still seemed to vanish in a flash!

How was your long weekend?
Did you manage to make it linger and feel like a holiday?
or did it fly by in a blink of an eye!?!

  1. It seems to me to have been years since the Easter Weekend was dry and sunny. You certainly was busy. We stayed 'at home' to stay away from the crowds! We no longer can walk the walks you do. Did some gardening too! x

    1. I agree - I can't really remember a lovely warm, dry and sunny long weekend. We were surprised how quiet it was generally, Skipton the town was busy but still not as busy as it could be, more like a normal Saturday prepandemic.xx

  2. We are between York and Scarborough and were also surprised at how quiet the roads were, given the weather. Usually the roads to the coast would be rammed on a bank holiday weekend. Perhaps the current cost of fuel has really begun to hit home.

    1. I'd wondered that too - however quite a few of my friends said they thought it was due to this being the first Easter holiday in two years that folk could actually get away as in jump on a plane and go somewhere. Who knows, but it was definitely very much quieter on the roads.

  3. What a blissful sounding weekend, I love your lamb photos and could murder a cheese and pickle sandwich now you've mentioned them!
Not being gainfully employed public holidays don't really register other than the post office being closed. xxx

    1. It is often the simple sarnie fillings that are the best - good old fashioned cheese and pickle = yum!

  4. What a wonderful weekend you have had, I am sure we pack more in to longer weekends just cos we can. It was busy here in the lakes the roads were all queues so maybe that is where everyone ended up. I think more people have gone abroad this year as they finally can. It does mean less money being put into local businesses but I for one won't miss the ridiculously busy roads we have had here for the last two years.

    1. The staycation was a bit of a double edged sword - it meant more money for local business however the pressure of the additional tourists seemed to have a negative effect too (litter/parking/shear numbers/antisocial behaviour etc etc

  6. Glad you enjoyed your weekend. We were home alone as TYM had headed off to Barcelona with a group of pals, so it was much quieter than usual. Hope Moss is healing ok. Arilx

    1. We thought we were going to be home alone for the weekend when Eldest and GF asked if they could join us. Moss is doing so well, her fur is growing back apart from the actual injury sites, that may not regrow (only small pink splodges to show where she'd had her stitches) - other than that - fit as a fiddle :) thank you x

  7. We had a really busy weekend too … mainly in the garden, actually making a start on the long list of jobs. Sound like you had a lovely weekend and I love your photo collages 😃

    1. I could do with spending a weekend in the garden too but 'life' gets in the way! the photo collage comes from this site (free) https://www.photocollage.com/ it takes a bit of practice to find what you like but once you do - it is great fun to set up the collages. Often I have more photos that I really have space, and I wonder if folk get bored scrolling through view after view after view, so I now chuck them all in one image and voila!

  8. Sounds a lovely weekend with nice weather & your collages are just gorgeous. I don't know how you do them. Our weekend was quiet with one unusually warm day for mid April, then rain & cool for the rest of it. We do need the rain here in our parts of Victoria, so it was appreciated. Thanks for sharing, take care & hugs.

Good to see Miss Moss appears to be fully recovered.

    1. I think if we had to restrict Moss any more she would have popped by now - as it was she got cabin fever within 24 hours of her surgery and keeping her quiet (as per vet instructions) was practically impossible - she making up for lost miles!

  11. We get a specially long weekend and we overfill it!
    Sounds like you did well.
We are chilling out with my brother in Somerset, before returning to Kent for yet another funeral before wending our way home

  12. It sounds like you had a great long weekend and I love your photo collages. I was able to swap my Tuesday morning at work to today so I didn't get home from North Wales until later in the afternoon yesterday. As for the weather, the last sunny and warm Easter - round here at least - was two years ago, and coupled with the first lockdown I went on some lovely daily walks with the dogs.

    1. It has been lovely having a warm and sunny bank holiday weekend - such a treat. The first lockdown was good weather but for obvious reasons walking was restricted to the local patch - well done with swapping the extra bit of time off :)
