Just about bordering on odd, I see things through different eyes. The heading says it all - I live, I love, I craft, I am me...

Weaving stories

 I've been playing .....

A little while ago, I'd accidently (oops - suspect my finger slipped on my keyboard ) purchased myself a small loom weaving kit and finally today was the first time I was able to get my hands on it and actually play!
The instructions it came with were a rather lost in translation, so I did a bit of online research and after realising where I'd gone wrong with setting up, I stuck the kettle on and got stuck in!

And I like!!

I like A LOT!

I loved the movement of each row as it builds up and the gentle growth of fabric from woollen thread. It is definitely a slow craft - a mindful, methodical and rhythmic craft and while the weather outside was foul tempered and miserable, I was engrossed and wanting to learn more.

I have since knotted the fringe and trimmed it a little shorter, soaked and blocked the mats and I am on with making the next two...... !

My chosen colours, all in pre-shrunk 100% wool, are a lovely tweedy grey, chocolate brown and a soft sandy shade. However each mug mat has a different pattern. The edges might be bumpy and my tension still needing practice however seeing the completed mug mats made my heart sing. I may have mentioned that I am enjoying this ... A LOT!

Right - this is the final  #moreblogvember post for November 2021. There is this myth that it take 21 days to form a habit (where in reality it is nearer 66 days - so two months of blogging just might be enough) we shall see.

  1. Those look lovely and I'm so glad you enjoy your new skill. I have a little loom in the attic which was my friend Annie's. The sort you can weave belts on. One of these days . . .

    1. I toyed with one of those - but then decided a small mid range beginners one would do to start with and if I liked then I could 'accidently' purchase another one !

  2. They are cute! I remember having a go at weaving many years ago and I enjoyed it. I might be found having an 'accident' myself very soon :)

    1. I was surprised how much pleasure I got from weaving having never tried it before - ever - which is strange for me coz I dabble in so much that you'd think I would have by now, have fun when you do 'accidently' purchase yourself a kit!! hahah

  3. They are sweet. I remember doing weaving at school a couple of times. I really enjoyed it and made a blue and white bag which sadly I no longer have. Also aged 7 I wove on cardboard to make a pot holder.

  4. Lovely colour choice, I like them a lot! I tried to make something similar for my doll's house with cocktail sticks and cotton and nearly went blind! xxx

    1. Good grief - I remember reading about your doll's house make over! I must admit going a bit squiff-eyed with concentration (but loved it!)

  5. I remember having a similar kit myself when I was a child, a simple affair which came with a few very small balls of wool to get started. I enjoyed it for a while but then got fed up of it as I'm not really a 'crafty' person and it was too time consuming. Your little mats look cute though and it's nice that your enjoying making them :)

    1. The one I have bought is definitely a kids/beginners type, as I did not want to spend a fortune only to find that 'it was not for me' :)

  6. Another new hobby? One has to try new stuff and here's to many more accidental purchases. You could always blame Pan for knocking your hand..... x

    1. Not a hobby - a craft!!!! (well - shall endeavour to get to the standard of craft but for now - playing!)
Yes, these accidental purchases are purely down to the cat walking across the key board (erhmmmm hahaha)

  7. Lovely & I remember doing a wee bit at school & then again in the early 80s when I went to a craft group in a very small country town where it only ran out of canning season as we nearly all worked at the cannery or orchard packing houses. I remember I quite enjoyed so maybe on my Xmas list(just joking as I don't have one). Love your colours, enjoy, take care & hugs.

  8. I stumbled across you from Crafty in the Med. I bought a rigid heddle loom in June and have since "accidently" bought a larger one and two inkle looms. Try a rigid heddle. They aren't as expensive as a full blown floor loom and are such fun. Crafts soothe the soul and calm the mind. And are cheaper than a psychiatrist.
